In a letter published in The Business and Media Institute web site Donald Boudreaux wrote:

In a free society prosperity is achieved by persons who take initiative for themselves – persons who do not sit around, brandishing excuses, waiting for their needs to be "addressed" by Great Leaders. Insofar as any person's needs become the responsibility of the state, two consequences are inevitable. First, and worst, that person loses his or her resourcefulness and dignity. Second, he or she suffers the perpetual risk that, as the winds of politics shift and economic reality collects its dues, the once-provident state becomes uninterested in "addressing” those needs or increasingly unable to do so.

I would add that Government cannot "create" prosperity through its' largesse.  It can either take resources from one group of individuals and give them to others or it can inflate the money supply and distribute the additional money to those whom it chooses.  In either case there is no inherent guarantee that prosperity will increase and to the extent that it does it will be, as noted by Prof. Boudreaux above, "achieved by persons who take the initiative for themselves".

Re: Prosperity
Thanks for posting this info!

I believe our financial independence relies solely upon our own actions. I’m sure you realize that it doesn’t happen by wasting time or even by spending endless hours in dedicated prayer. Financial freedom is the result of thorough planning, careful investment, effectual problem solving, and wise choices.

In taking a quick glance around at the people we know, why do we see so many who are believe they are not going to be held accountable for their choices? Why do they subconsciously think they will harvest something other than what they have planted? A warped mentality like this subtly promotes mediocrity and underachievement. Some individuals even believe that failure is their destiny and there is nothing they can do about it! They have yet to realize one important truth: Success and failure are not destinations; their choices are the paths that lead to them.

I appreciate you taking the time to write this information. That’s very helpful.
