Leading from Behind

Once upon a time the United States of America was considered the leader of the free world.  We stood up to evil empires like The Soviet Union and freedom-loving people looked to us as a principled example of what freedom means.  Today we are no longer in the lead.  I would like to say we are behind the curve except that our foreign policy lately can more appropriately be described as off the road or stuck in neutral, at best.
Charles Krauthammer has an excellent, as almost always, opinion essay in yesterday's Washington Post.  In  it he criticizes the administration which was described by Ryan Lizza in the New Yorker as follows:

Obama may be moving toward something resembling a doctrine. One of his advisers described the president’s actions in Libya as “leading from behind.”

The result is not a doctrine but it is a disgrace to America's heritage as the leader of the free world and it shows the President as failing to reach the level of a Carteresque Presidency.
