Butter: a personal story

When I was growing up in Wisconsin in the 1950's the state government in its wisdom had laws restricting the sale of oleo margarine.  This was no doubt an attempt to protect the business of dairy farming which included the production of butter.  I remember my family would drive to Illinois (we lived near the border) to purchase oleo, not for health reasons, but to save money as it was much less expensive than butter.

How far we have come that with the growth of the nanny state and the change in health beliefs a ban on butter (at least in
the UK) is being recommended by health officials.  We have come to the point where the state even considers banning what was once a protected food.  Once again in all of this I ask the simple question: who will protect us from the State?
